Former MMA Fighter Josh Longood Restrains Unruly Passenger Mid-Flight

A former MMA fighter may well have saved dozens of lives aboard a Frontier Airlines flight on 31st May, when chaos broke out somewhere between Puerto Rico and Chicago. Josh Longood, a professional fighter with a record of 4-1-0, was travelling home from his brother’s bachelor party when fellow passenger Juan Gabriel Reyes attempted to force open an emergency door mid-flight and physically attacked an off-duty airline employee.

Former MMA Fighter Josh Longood Steps Up When It Matters Most

Longood didn’t hesitate. He told WJW-TV he’d already clocked that Reyes was trouble before things escalated — feet in the aisle, eyes on the suspect. “I knew I had to be the one to step in, and I knew I could do it safely without anybody getting injured,” he explained. As the aircraft made an emergency descent into Miami, Longood moved in, pinned Reyes against the window, and kept him controlled throughout. “I just kind of sat with him, holding him down and kind of treated him like a little kid that was throwing a tantrum,” he added, speaking to NewsNation. Calm, composed, and absolutely clinical — exactly what you’d expect from someone who’s competed inside a cage.

Longood also alleged that Reyes, 51, was heavily intoxicated at the time. Reyes now faces serious federal charges, including interference with the flight crew. Frankly, given what could have happened at altitude, those charges barely scratch the surface of the danger he created.

A Fighter’s Background That Made All the Difference

For those unfamiliar with Longood’s fighting career, he competed in regional MMA promotions Big Guns and Justified Defiance Fight Series. All four of his professional victories came by way of stoppage — the man knows how to finish things. He last stepped into an MMA bout in 2016, before returning to combat sports via a grappling match in October 2023. Clearly, the instincts never left him.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time MMA and air travel have collided in the headlines recently. UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov was removed from an emergency row seat just weeks before cornering at UFC 311, while Arman Tsarukyan was ejected from an American Airlines flight earlier this year after allegedly failing to follow instructions from cabin crew. Unlike those incidents, though, Longood’s story ends with him very much the hero. Sometimes the right person is in the right place at the right moment — and on this occasion, that made all the difference.
