Ruben Amorim Leading Contender to Take Charge at AC Milan

ruben amorim ac milan

Ruben Amorim has emerged as the leading contender to become the next AC Milan manager, according to a source who spoke to ESPN. The Portuguese coach, 41, is firmly in the frame as the Italian giants hunt for a new direction — and frankly, it’s a move that makes a lot of sense.

Ruben Amorim the Leading Contender as Milan Rebuild from the Top Down

Milan’s owners RedBird Capital triggered a full-scale overhaul after Massimiliano Allegri’s second stint in the San Siro dugout ended in disaster — a fifth-place Serie A finish and no Champions League football to show for it. Allegri wasn’t the only one shown the door, either. The club’s chief executive and sporting director both departed as part of the same brutal clear-out. When a club rips it all back to the studs like that, they need a coach with a genuine identity. Enter Amorim.

The 41-year-old left Manchester United in January following a gruelling 14-month tenure at Old Trafford. His time in the Premier League was nothing short of turbulent — United limped to a 15th-place finish and suffered a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. Before that painful chapter, however, Amorim had built a glittering reputation at Sporting CP, and that pedigree hasn’t been forgotten.

Milan’s Desperate Need for a Title Challenger

The scale of Milan’s decline is stark. They last lifted the Serie A title back in 2022, and since then the trajectory has been nothing short of woeful — finishing 4th, 2nd, 8th, and 5th in the four seasons that followed. A club of that stature simply cannot accept mediocrity, and RedBird Capital have made their impatience crystal clear.

Consequently, Amorim now sits in a strong position to land the job, per ESPN’s source. It would represent a significant opportunity for a manager looking to restore his reputation after the Old Trafford nightmare. Milan’s project is broken but fixable — and if Amorim can rediscover the form that made him one of Europe’s most exciting coaches at Sporting, the Rossoneri faithful might just have something to believe in again.
