Yan Diomande FIFA World Cup Focus: Ivory Coast Star Carving His Own Path

Yan Diomande is not interested in living in anyone’s shadow. The Ivory Coast winger has made that crystal clear ahead of the FIFA World Cup, insisting his only focus is on his own development — not on comparisons with Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise or anyone else.

Yan Diomande’s FIFA World Cup Mindset: All About the Team

The comparisons with Olise are obvious enough. Diomande succeeded the 24-year-old as the Bundesliga Rookie of the Year, and both players carry that electric West African flair that makes them virtually unmissable in the German top flight. However, speaking to ESPN via New Balance, Diomande was quick to shut that narrative down ahead of Thursday’s pre-World Cup friendly, where Ivory Coast face France at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes — a direct clash with Olise himself.

“I have a big respect for him, but I’m not looking at him as someone to emulate,” Diomande said. “I watch Harry Kane, or Luis Díaz, because they’re top players. I’m learning something from them, but it’s not like I’m going only to my TV to watch them play.”

Furthermore, it’s not just individual glory driving him. “Maybe tomorrow I want the Ballon d’Or — it depends on the mood,” he admitted. “But right now I’m just trying to be focused on myself, score more goals, do a good World Cup. It’s all about the team.”

Bundesliga Breakthrough and a Nation’s Hope

The numbers back up the hype. Diomande contributed to 20 goals in 33 Bundesliga outings this season as RB Leipzig finished third, and he became only the fourth African player — after Amine Harit, Silas, and Victor Boniface — to claim the Rookie of the Year award. Not bad for a lad born in Abidjan in 2006, who grew up in the United States, graduated from the Florida-based DME Academy, and made just 10 appearances for Spanish side Leganes before Leipzig came calling in 2025.

He credits his faith as the foundation beneath his remarkable rise. “In Africa, we believe in God a lot and I do as well — work hard, believe in yourself, don’t listen to people, and God is going to do the rest,” he said.

Consequently, the weight of history sits on his shoulders whether he invites it or not. Ivory Coast return to the World Cup for the first time since 2014, when a golden generation — including the legendary Didier Drogba and rapid winger Gervinho — failed in their third straight attempt to escape the group stage. Diomande acknowledges those icons without chasing their legacy. PSG and Liverpool have also reportedly been monitoring his progress — read more about the transfer interest here.

World Cup Group E: Ecuador, Germany and Curacao Await

After Thursday’s France friendly, the Elephants head to their World Cup base camp in Philadelphia. They open Group E against Ecuador on 14 June in Philadelphia, then face Germany in Toronto on 20 June, before wrapping up the group stage against debutants Curacao back in Philadelphia on 25 June.

“I’ve been looking forward to participating in the World Cup,” Diomande said. “The mood is good, everyone is excited. We’re just waiting for the day — but we’re ready.”

Believe it. This kid is only getting started.
