Stars Who Left Their Clubs: Giannis to Gerrard and Everyone Between

Giannis Antetokounmpo leaving the Milwaukee Bucks for the Miami Heat in 2026-27 is the latest seismic example of stars who left their clubs — franchises they defined — and suited up elsewhere. The Greek Freak spent 13 seasons in Milwaukee, made ten consecutive All-Star appearances, and delivered that unforgettable 2021 NBA title when the Bucks beat the Phoenix Suns in six games. And yet, here we are. He’s heading to South Beach.

Basketball Stars Who Left Their Clubs Behind

Giannis isn’t walking a road nobody has walked before. Michael Jordan — the man synonymous with the Chicago Bulls, six championships, and basketball greatness — bizarrely ended his career with the Washington Wizards. After retiring twice and a brief detour into minor league baseball, Jordan joined Washington’s front office in January 2000, then pulled on a Wizards jersey as a player in September 2001. His final NBA game came on 16 April 2003. Not at the United Center. At the Wizards.

Similarly, Patrick Ewing spent 15 seasons defining the New York Knicks — averaging 22.8 points, 10.4 rebounds and 2.7 blocks — before requesting a trade that shipped him to the Seattle SuperSonics. He then moved on to the Orlando Magic before retiring in 2002. Hakeem Olajuwon’s exit from the Houston Rockets was equally jarring: 17 seasons, two championships, two Defensive Player of the Year awards, one MVP, and then a trade to the Toronto Raptors before the 2001 season for one final, quiet campaign.

Furthermore, Tony Parker — six-time All-Star, four-time NBA champion with the San Antonio Spurs across 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014 — stunned everyone by signing with the Charlotte Hornets before 2018-19, though he retired after just one season there in July 2019. Klay Thompson, meanwhile, ended his 13-season Golden State Warriors stint when he joined the Dallas Mavericks via sign-and-trade in summer 2024, swapping Stephen Curry for Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

Football Legends Who Moved On From Their Defining Clubs

Closer to home, two stories stand above the rest. Steven Gerrard is Liverpool. Full stop. He joined the club in 1998, captained them with ferocity and passion until 2015, won the Champions League, two FA Cups, three League Cups and the UEFA Cup — yet never lifted a Premier League trophy. Remarkably, he then crossed the Atlantic to sign with the LA Galaxy in January 2015, making 13 appearances before retiring in November 2016 at the age of 36.

Then there’s John Terry, Chelsea through and through from 1998 to 2017. The centre-back won five Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups and the Champions League as captain. In January 2017, he joined Aston Villa, spending one season there before departing in May 2018 after the club missed promotion. He later returned to Villa Park as assistant head coach — which, if you squint, feels like the universe correcting itself.

Ultimately, what Giannis Antetokounmpo’s move to Miami proves is that no matter the era, no matter the sport, even the most iconic partnerships between a player and a club can unravel. It’s brutal, it’s fascinating, and honestly — it’s what makes sport so utterly compelling.
