PFL Africa Expansion Continues Full Steam Despite UFC’s Continental Hesitation

Whilst the UFC treads cautiously around African expansion, PFL Africa continues its fearless march across the continent, bringing top-tier mixed martial arts directly to the people. The promotion’s second season kicks off this Friday at Pretoria’s SunBet Arena, proving that commitment trumps caution when it comes to growing the sport.

PFL Africa Pushes Forward Where Others Fear to Tread

The contrast couldn’t be starker. Where the UFC remains hesitant about African ventures, PFL Africa charges ahead with unwavering conviction. Last December’s finale in Cotonou, Benin exemplified this fearless approach—the event proceeded just two weeks after a failed coup attempt against President Patrice Talon in the very same city.

“The finals in Benin happened two weeks after the attempted coup, but we showed resolve and our partners showed resolve across the board,” PFL Africa GM Elias Schulze explained. That’s the kind of grit that separates pretenders from contenders in the combat sports business.

Meanwhile, the promotion’s strategy spans the continent intelligently. South Africa anchors their operations as “the heart of MMA on the continent,” whilst Rwanda’s BK Arena in Kigali showcased the promotion’s ability to break new ground. The West African push, particularly through Benin, demonstrates PFL’s commitment to representing Francophone Africa—a region that produced former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou.

Accessibility Remains King in African MMA Market

Here’s where PFL gets it absolutely right—tickets start from just R199. Compare that to the UFC’s notorious pricing structure, which even South African star Dricus du Plessis and Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie have identified as barriers to bringing major events to Africa.

Furthermore, Friday’s card delivers serious firepower. Nkosi ‘King’ Ndebele headlines against Italy’s Michele ‘The Arrow’ Clemente in bantamweight action, whilst heavyweight sluggers Justin Clarke and Senegal’s Abdoulaye Kane provide the co-main event violence. Home favourite Peace Nguphane faces Benin’s Yabna N’Tchala in welterweight combat, and Nigeria’s Juliet Ukah squares off against compatriot Jane Osigwe in women’s strawweight action.

Additionally, the continental representation runs deep. DR Congo features prominently with Jean-Jacques Lubaya facing Shadrack Yemba in featherweight action, whilst Kunle Lawal represents Nigeria against DR Congo’s Eliezer Kubanza in the welterweight division.

Schulze hints at further West African expansion, with announcements expected soon. This isn’t just about hosting fights—it’s about building sustainable infrastructure for African MMA. Whilst others hesitate, PFL Africa delivers where it matters most: inside the cage and in the hearts of African fight fans.
