Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with sources telling ESPN that Spurs are willing to outbid Manchester United to land the 21-year-old. This is the kind of transfer window that tells you everything about a club’s ambition — and right now, Tottenham mean business.
Mateus Fernandes Transfer Battle Heats Up as Spurs Outmuscle United
United had been in advanced talks with the relegated Hammers over a deal, but in recent days Tottenham have dramatically accelerated their interest and signalled a readiness to go higher on the fee. According to ESPN sources, West Ham are holding out for around £80m — though a full-blown bidding war between two of England’s biggest clubs could push that figure even further north.
Fernandes arrived at the London Stadium from Southampton last summer for an initial £38m, and that deal includes a clause giving Southampton 15% of any future sale. So the Saints, despite their own relegation misery, stand to pocket a tidy windfall. Last season the Portuguese midfielder contributed four goals and four assists across 38 appearances — solid numbers, but the real appeal is his ceiling. The kid is 21. He’s barely started.
Crucially, West Ham’s relegation to the Championship does not mean they’re desperate. The Hammers are under no immediate financial pressure to sell, which means any suitor will have to pay top dollar to prise him away from east London.
De Zerbi’s Tottenham Rebuild Refuses to Slow Down
This pursuit fits perfectly into the broader picture at Spurs. Head coach Roberto De Zerbi is overseeing an aggressive overhaul after Tottenham narrowly avoided the drop last season — and the board are clearly backing him to the hilt. As we covered recently, goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka became their fourth signing of the summer window on Wednesday, following Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson through the door.
Moreover, Spurs are also set to submit an improved bid for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali after the Magpies knocked back an initial offer in the region of £75m. That’s two marquee central midfield targets being chased simultaneously. De Zerbi isn’t messing about.
Fernandes is young, dynamic and exactly the profile you’d expect a coach of De Zerbi’s style to covet. Whether Tottenham can fend off United — and meet West Ham’s valuation — remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: this summer, Spurs are swinging for the fences.
