UFC 327 What’s Next: Carlos Ulberg Title Defence Options Explored

carlos ulberg title defence

The light heavyweight division has a new king, but bloody hell, what happens next? Carlos Ulberg’s stunning first-round knockout of Jiří Procházka at UFC 327 capped off ten straight victories and earned him the title, yet the New Zealander appeared to suffer a leg injury that could derail his immediate plans. The question burning through every fight fan’s mind: what’s next for the 205-pound throne?

Carlos Ulberg Title Defence Scenarios

This division is absolutely cursed, innit? Procházka vacated in 2022, Jan Blachowicz and Magomed Ankalaev fought to a dead heat in December 2022’s title bout, and Jamahal Hill vacated in 2023. Now Ulberg potentially blows his knee whilst claiming gold.

However, if the injury isn’t severe, the obvious contenders are thin on the ground. Khalil Rountree Jr emerges as the best shout despite his recent loss. His war with Procházka in October was neck-and-neck, far more inspiring than Ankalaev’s defeat to Alex Pereira on the same card. Neither man represents a perfect option, but Rountree’s the standout choice if Ulberg’s fit to scrap.

Should the knee injury prove serious, we’re staring at an interim title fight scenario that might not resolve until next year.

Paulo Costa’s Light Heavyweight Future

Meanwhile, Paulo Costa looked brilliant against Azamat Murzakanov at UFC 327, suggesting his future lies firmly at 205 pounds. The Brazilian should bin those brutal middleweight cuts for good.

Whilst Ankalaev seems like a harsh matchup for someone with just one light heavyweight victory, it makes perfect sense. Costa claims he wants the best, and imagine if he sparked the Dagestani wrestler? He’d immediately legitimise himself as a genuine title threat. The UFC rankings would shift dramatically.

Furthermore, if Khamzat Chimaev moves up from middleweight as planned, a scrap with Costa at 205 pounds becomes compelling. Their long-standing beef deserves settling, with the winner earning title consideration.

Featherweight and Strawweight Shake-ups

Elsewhere on the UFC 327 card, Aaron Pico’s brutal knockout sets up mouthwatering possibilities. A clash with Andre Silva would be pure violence – two 29-year-old featherweights with bad intentions and recent learning experiences. Silva’s ranking at number six makes this a statement opportunity for the unranked Pico.

Additionally, Christian Vallejos deserves recognition after his impressive showing. At just 24, he’s already looking like a problem for the entire division. Vallejos versus any top-ten opponent would create fireworks.

In the strawweight division, Tatiana Suarez faces an awkward situation. Zhang Weili’s likely return to 115 pounds blocks immediate title shots, making Virna Jandiroba the logical opponent. They’ve been booked twice before – injuries scuppered both attempts – but third time’s the charm. Suarez’s wrestling credentials against Jandiroba’s submission skills promises technical brilliance cageside.
