Brentford Bid £40 Million for Said El Mala in Blockbuster Summer Move

Brentford have tabled a £40 million bid for FC Cologne winger Said El Mala, according to sources speaking to ESPN. The Bees are pushing hard to land the 19-year-old Germany Under-21 forward, and Cologne are currently weighing up the offer.

Said El Mala Bid Signals Brentford’s Serious Summer Ambition

El Mala has been one of the most electrifying breakout talents in the Bundesliga this season. In his first top-flight campaign, the teenager scored 13 goals and chipped in five assists across 20 starts and 14 substitute appearances for Cologne. Numbers like that do not go unnoticed — ESPN report that Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are also circling, which makes Brentford’s move all the more bold. Cologne have not rejected the offer, but they have not accepted it either. Time, therefore, is very much of the essence.

Brentford already moved early this window to secure RB Salzburg centre-back Jannik Schuster, so the El Mala pursuit clearly signals that manager Keith Andrews wants genuine firepower to build on a ninth-place Premier League finish. Missing out on a Europa Conference League spot on goal difference will have stung the dressing room, and reinforcements of this calibre suggest the club are not prepared to let that happen again.

A Deal That Could Break Brentford’s Transfer Record

Context matters here. Brentford’s record signing remains Dango Ouattara, who arrived from Bournemouth for £42 million back in August 2025. A successful El Mala deal could fall just short of that figure — or, depending on add-ons and final negotiations, potentially surpass it altogether. Either way, this is a statement of intent from a club that continues to punch well above its weight in the transfer market.

Furthermore, landing El Mala ahead of the Bundesliga giants sniffing around him would represent a genuine coup. BBC Sport have noted the growing competition for top young European talent this summer, and Brentford are right in the thick of it.
